Giving where it matters most—now

Environmental and social philanthropy has supported meaningful causes for decades, quietly strengthening communities, protecting natural resources, and helping families thrive.  Today, that mission has become more urgent than ever.  As the pace of change accelerates—environmentally, socially, and economically—so too does the need for intentional giving that strengthens the foundations of a stable, healthy society.

Our environment, our communities, and our shared sense of well-being are at a tipping point.  But this is not a partisan issue.  Regardless of political affiliation, we all want safe drinking water, clean air, strong families, and local communities that can weather the storms of uncertainty.  These aren’t ideological goals—they’re practical, deeply human ones.

Philanthropy has the power to fill the gaps that politics can’t always reach.  It’s nimble, values-driven and, when done well, focused on solutions, not sides.  And it can drive tangible change—fast.

In fact, speed to action is a trait that sets Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)-focused philanthropy apart from other forms of giving.  Unlike traditional charities in areas like the arts or education which often have the luxury of relying on well-funded foundations designed to last for generations, ESG philanthropy is often built for momentum and speed.  Many ESG charities follow what’s called a ‘spend-down’ model—an approach pioneered by the Gates Foundation—where the goal is to utilize all available assets within a fixed timeframe, usually around 20 years.  This rethinking of acquiring and spending charitable funds reflects a new philanthropic mindset: when the need is urgent, delay is not an option.

In today’s climate (both literal and figurative), that ability to act quickly is critical.  The time for ESG givers to step up is now.

Giving in the ESG space can take many forms.  By aligning your own values, your vision, and the impact you want to see in the world, you can help drive change where it matters most to you.

There are many ESG-focused charities to choose from.  Here are just a few to consider:

  • National Park Foundation:  More than a century ago, private citizens from all walks of life took action to establish and protect our national parks.  Today, the Foundation generates private support and builds strategic partnerships to protect and enhance America’s national parks for present and future generations.

  • Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP):  Launched at COP26, GEAPP aims to provide renewable energy to people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  This alliance seeks to reduce annual emissions by one billion tons and eliminate energy poverty for one billion people by the end of 2029.

  • The Trevor Project:  The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBTQ young people.  Services include 24/7 crisis intervention and suicide prevention programs, extensive education programs, and an advocacy department fighting for pro-LGBTQ legislation and against anti-LGBTQ rhetoric/policy positions.

  • Climate Change Fund:  Developed in partnership with Giving Green, the Climate Change Fund supports organizations implementing bold, systemic solutions to reduce emissions.  These groups drive impact by shaping strong climate policies, advancing clean technologies, fostering sustainable markets, and shifting societal norms to accelerate climate action.

Change can’t afford to wait.  ESG-focused giving—especially through nimble, high-impact nonprofits—can help accelerate the solutions our world urgently needs.  The stakes are high, and sustainable solutions that protect future generations are vital.  Whether you’re giving $100 or $100,000, your contribution can help drive large, important shifts.

At Leisure Capital, we’ve seen firsthand how impactful ESG-aligned giving can be—not just for the causes it supports, but for the people doing the giving.  Aligning your capital with your conscience creates a sense of purpose, joy, and hope.  (We also offer an ESG strategy to our clients that simplifies investing in companies that support these initiatives.)  Contact us today to learn how our team can help you and your family define a plan that enables you to create the greatest possible impact—no matter what your charitable and gift planning goals may be.

The environment and the social structures that support our communities are not future concerns.  They’re here.  They’re now.  And they’re calling for our attention.  Let’s answer that call together with open hearts and bold action.
